"Woman" was
recorded in 1997 at the multi award winning "Mixmasters"
Studio to highlight and focus on Alex's vocal talents, hence
the title "Woman". It maybe should have been a solo
album, as the songs were so vastly different from what we had
recorded before, but these were the songs that were being written
at that moment of time. The musicians we were using in1997 were
a somewhat intermediary outfit, who joined after the original
line-up had left us to have babies and fall in love with Scottish
women, and just before the present musicians came on board.
These guys didn't have the same energy or chemistry as our past
& present line-up, so we decided to record a ballad album,
where the use of drums and great grooves wouldn't matter so
much. Alex had
recently gone through a divorce, and we were just about to
get married when we recorded it. In fact, Jim finished mixing
it the night before the wedding. These highs and lows are reflected
in the lyrics. The problem of getting along with your ex-partner
for the sake of a child is documented in the song; "Dance
from a distance" (Our favourite lyrics along with Independents
Day!) And we actually sang; Whenever, (I'll be there) at our
wedding when our parents came out from Ireland & Scotland.
"Woman" the single
has been re-recorded and modernised by a young Welsh singer
called Rebecca Trehearn. In 1999, it came 9th in the British
heat of the Eurovision Song contest, and Jonathon King absolutely
loved it. The Borderers are also trying to get Australia's
Tina Arena to sing it. Three of the songs were written by
our old keyboard player, Glyn Lehmann, and the track "You
& I" was written for an Irish movie that is still
to be made.
The CD was distributed &
sold by Australia Post, which was a unique idea at the time
and saved us 30%. In reality it meant we didn't have to pay
a music distributor this fee when Oz Post had their own internal
distribution. This is why the original realease of the CD was red & white ( the
colour of Australia Post's logo) Major Record Companies have
copied this idea since.
The album was released on Mothers
Day, and it featured a competition inside where women could
win some romantic prizes. It is still Jim & Alex's favourite
CD, and is perfect when listened to at night with a glass
of wine.
A couple of the tracks; "All
or nothing" & "May the good times never end"
required real string parts, so we asked some members of the
"Adelaide Symphony Orchestra" to help out, and they
did.
