Reviews

.............I've been listening to a new album by The BordererS that gorgeous, energetic duo from South Australia, who come to Tamworth each year and kick their heels up in the most artistic manner possible.
This wonderful outfit introduced yet another aspect to our ever evolving festival and their albums to date have reflected their own individual style. This time around though The BordererS have gone country and it's an awesome outcome.

Take a little bluegrass, mix it gently with some Dixieland jazz, a touch of Zydeco and you've got the essential ingredients of "A Time For Change" The BordererS and The Rough Diamonds. Jim says the album was heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen's recording in 2006 of The Seeger Sessions protest songs Pete Seeger used to sing in the 60s. While you won't find much country on The Boss's disc, you will on "A Time For Change".

I love the album. BordererS originals are interspersed with traditional Irish songs and Alex's take on the Leonard Cohen classic, "Hallelujah", is to die for. Track four is superb, and is one for all the mums out there and those people who love their mums. It's called "My Mother, My Angel of Love", and it certainly puts into perspective a mother's unconditional love. As you'd expect from any BordererS album, there's lots of rollicking dance tunes, but there’s a real country edge to this disc that shows the band's versatility and universal love of music.

Go out and buy yourself a copy and buy one for your mum too! In the meantime, visit their website, www.theborderers.com.au

Some first impressions from our team:

A fantastically configured array of wonderfully toned string instruments and perfected vocal tone and harmony. The album features a wide variety of classic country-esque upbeat tunes, with layer upon layer of string and wind instrumentation. Everything is produced and blended together to perfection, leaving you with very busy and intriguing songs. With all the energy that is clearly eminent throughout the album, The Borderers are still able to retain more laid back and easy going songs. The instrumentation is reminiscent of Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen and Tom Waits, with vocal range similar to Emmylou Harris.

Tr. 1 Higher Ground - Great Banjo intro leading into a strong chorus with very well rounded instrumentation

Tr. 6 Love is the Answer - Very catchy and radio friendly vocal melody with great lyrics producing an equally as great message. It is all held together with the perfect amount of layering.

Tr. 11 No! We're not going home - Very upbeat and energetic song with doubled vocals leading into yet another catchy chorus
